About This Episode
About the Guest
Ron Galella (1931–2022) was known as the “Godfather of the U.S. Paparazzi” and remains the most famous and controversial photojournalist in American history. Over a career spanning six decades, Galella captured over three million images of the world’s most elusive stars, from his legendary interactions with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to his infamous run-in with Marlon Brando.
His work shifted the lens of celebrity photography from staged studio portraits to the raw, spontaneous, and “off-guard” moments that defined 20th-century pop culture. Today, Galella’s photography is regarded as fine art, housed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Tate Modern. Represented by his dedicated estate and archive, Galella’s work continues to influence the worlds of fashion, film, and photography, serving as a definitive visual record of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the grit of New York’s Studio 54 era.
