Who we are
This site is mcauleytucker.com, the home of The McAuley Tucker Show — interviews, articles, and reviews covering film and television. The site is operated from Ontario, Canada.
This policy explains what information the site collects, why it collects it, how long it is kept, and what you can do about it. If anything here is unclear, write to projects@mcauleytucker.com
What we collect
Information you give us
- Comments. The name, email address, and website you enter in the comment form, plus the comment itself.
- Contact and press enquiries. Anything you send through a contact form or by email — your name, email address, and whatever you choose to tell us.
- Email list. If you subscribe, your email address and any name you provide.
- Accounts. If you register on the site, the details in your user profile.
Information collected automatically
- Your IP address and browser user agent string, collected with comments to help detect spam.
- Standard server log data: pages requested, referring page, date and time, browser and device type.
- Aggregate traffic statistics — which pages are read, roughly where readers are located, how they arrived.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not run behavioural advertising on this site.
Comments
When you leave a comment, we collect the data shown in the comment form along with your IP address and browser user agent string, which help with spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address — a hash — may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. Gravatar’s privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.
Comments may be screened by an automated spam detection service. Flagged comments and their associated data may be held for review.
Media
If you upload images to the site, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download images and extract that data.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored in your browser. This site uses them for the following:
- Comment convenience. If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website so you don’t have to re-enter them. These last one year.
- Login. Visiting the login page sets a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies; it holds no personal data and is discarded when you close the browser. Logging in sets cookies for your login and display preferences — login cookies last two days, screen option cookies a year. Choosing “Remember Me” extends your login to two weeks. Logging out removes them.
- Editing. Editing or publishing a post saves an additional cookie containing no personal data, just the post ID. It expires after one day.
- Analytics. Our analytics provider may set cookies or similar identifiers to distinguish repeat visits from new ones.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Parts of the site may not work as expected if you do.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles and interviews on this site regularly include embedded content — video players, audio players, social posts, trailers, and clips. Embedded content from another website behaves exactly as if you had visited that website directly.
Those services may collect data about you, set their own cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor how you interact with the embedded content — including linking that activity to your account if you are logged in to them. Their privacy policies govern that data, not this one.
Services commonly embedded here include YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Instagram, and X. Links to other sites work the same way: once you leave mcauleytucker.com, this policy no longer applies.
Analytics
We use Google to understand which articles and interviews people read and how they find them. This is reported to us in aggregate, visit counts, popular pages, referral sources, approximate region, and is not used to identify individual readers.
Who we share your data with
We share personal information only with the service providers that keep the site running, and only to the extent they need it:
- Our web host, which stores the site and its database.
- Our spam detection service, which screens comments.
- Our analytics provider.
- Our email service provider, if you subscribe.
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
We may also disclose information where required by law, or where necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of the site or its readers.
How long we keep your data
- Comments. Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely, so follow-up comments from the same person can be recognized and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue.
- Registered users. The personal information in a user profile is kept as long as the account exists. Users can see, edit, or delete their information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also see and edit it.
- Contact messages. Kept as long as needed to handle the enquiry and maintain a record of correspondence.
- Subscribers. Kept until you unsubscribe.
- Server logs and analytics. Kept for a limited period according to our host’s and analytics provider’s retention settings.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including anything you provided. You can also ask us to erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not cover data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.
More broadly, you can ask us to confirm what personal information we hold, correct anything inaccurate, delete it, or stop using it for a particular purpose. Where we rely on your consent — for the email list, for example — you can withdraw it at any time.
To make a request, email projects@mcauleytucker.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting. We aim to respond within 30 days.
Readers in Canada may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if they are unsatisfied with our response. Readers in the UK, EU, or California may have additional rights under their own laws; we apply the rights above to everyone regardless of where you live.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
The site is operated from Canada, and our service providers may store or process data in Canada, the United States, or elsewhere. Information held in another country may be accessible to that country’s courts and law enforcement under its own laws.
How we protect your data
The site is served over HTTPS, administrative access is limited to accounts that need it and protected by strong credentials, and software is kept updated. No website can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold.
Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact projects@mcauleytucker.com and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Material changes will be noted on this page.
